Position: Forklift truck (FLT) driver. I joined the FLT Apprentice Academy when I was 17 before qualifying as a full-time driver.
Role: My usual shift is 8pm till 5am, and during that time we will move around 550 pallets. My main responsibilities lie in tipping and loading vehicles, although I also must ensure I promote health and safety throughout the warehouse and to the members.
I also cover for lead drivers when they are on holiday, assisting the supervisor run the lane to ensure a smooth process. I have to delegate tasks to other drivers and provide cover for the supervisor while he is on his break. On other occasions I can be on the shunter for the night, bringing depot trailers through the hub for unloading.
Training: While at the Academy I completed my Apprenticeship and gained my Level 2 warehouse NVQ. I have also undertaken a shunter and first aid course, which has helped me progress my position and given me more knowledge of the job role.
Biggest Change: It has to be the opening of SuperHub and the new scanning equipment that has been fitted to the FLTs which allows us to instantly weigh and photo every pallet of freight.
Ambition: To keep working my way up the ladder. I wouldn’t mind becoming a professional footballer, either!
